MoreThis chapter addresses the question of whether
a universal basic income (UBI) would improve the position of women or advance the cause
of gender equality. It points out how feminists have long been interested in the UBI as
an instrument of social change, but not all feminists believe that adopting a UBI would
represent a change for the better. It also surveys some of the main feminist arguments
for and against a UBI. The chapter highlights how UBI could help to rectify the failure
of properly valuing caregiving by providing some recognition and compensation for the
caregiving work that women do. It talks about the money a UBI provides that would make a
real, material difference in women’s lives.
